Interfaith Ministries Hosts Back to School Bash

Interfaith Ministries Hosts Back to School Family Event for ESOL Students & Families

Multi-lingual learners across the district were given an invitation to attend a special Back to School Bash hosted by Interfaith Ministries on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at West New Bern Recreation Center. These families represent many different countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Colombia, Guatemala, Germany, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), and more. Many students from Trent Park Elementary, J.T. Barber Elementary, James W. Smith Elementary, Oaks Road Academy, A.H. Bangert Elementary, H.J. McDonald Middle School, Grover C. Fields Middle School, and New Bern High School attended the event.

The Craven County Schools English to Students of Other Languages (ESOL) Department and Interfaith Refugee Ministry have built a partnership to provide opportunities that encourage multilingual family involvement at school, honor their contributions, and help them learn about local resources aimed at improving student achievement. When schools and the community support involvement, students make greater gains.

Students and their families visited tables to learn more about community resources, such as Craven Community College, Craven Literacy Council, Interfaith Refugee Ministry, Craven Smart Start, and the Coastal Coalition for Substance Awareness and Prevention.  Families visited the Craven County Public Library System's mobile unit to sign up for library cards which allow recipients to check out books and technology.  Snacks were provided by Insomnia Cookies and Pirate's Popcorn from Greenville, NC. Many educators and school leaders were also present to help with introductions while building relationships with family members and making connections with the agencies providing their educational resources.

This community partnership was a great success! We are so thankful our multilingual learners and their families attended. We look forward to building upon this event to provide our ESOL students and families with the necessary resources to be successful.
