Love is in the Air with Student Created Valentines
By: Erin Strohschein, Art Teacher- Havelock Middle School
The annual Craven County Valentine Card Fundraiser is an event that is held every year in efforts to raise money that goes back into the art teacher’s classrooms in Craven County. This year, twenty schools participated and over 500 cards were made by Craven County students. These cards are in the theme of” valentine” or “love” and included at least one image of a heart with no written words. They are currently on sale for $3.50 a piece at Craven’s Bank of the Arts in New Bern.
The Craven County Valentine’s Card Fundraiser began 14 years ago when budget cuts happened, and many teachers didn’t have funds to provide materials for their classrooms. This idea was originally created by the Craven’s Art Council, passed along to Carolina Creations, and now is back in the hands of the Craven’s Art Council with the partnership of the Twin River’s Art Association. The Twin Rivers Art Association provided all of the materials for the schools interested in participating. Once the Craven County teachers collected the student made cards, they were displayed at the Bank of the Arts in New Bern where they will be available for purchase until February 14th. The Bank of the Arts also allowed one framed artwork from each participating school to be hung in their main gallery this year along with the cards. Having student artwork in such a prestigious location is a great way for the Craven County teachers to celebrate their young artist’s accomplishments and hard work. Teachers that participate are also able to educate their students about the process of selling artwork and use that to discuss life application when it comes to visual arts.
The Craven Arts Council provided a reception for the Valentine Cards during their monthly Art walk held on January 10th. Along with other guest artists and musicians, the students and their families were invited to come and browse the artworks on display as well as purchase cards that were made for this event. This event was immensely successful, with many of our featured students, their families and other community members coming to see the artwork the Craven County students has made.
Once the sales of the Valentine Cards is complete, the monies collected will be divided evenly amongst the twenty classrooms that participated. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be used to replenish supplies and help to create better learning environments for our Craven County students. The Craven County art teachers are very thankful for the relationship with the Twin River’s Art Association and Craven Arts Council that help make this fundraiser possible.
