West Craven High Theatre Arts Program Achieves National Recognition
In June 2019, two of West Craven High School’s senior thespians – Madison Smith and Bryce Bivens – proudly represented Eastern North Carolina at the International Thespian Society (ITS) Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bryce, who is currently attending East Carolina University to become a theater arts educator, was invited to audition for college scholarship opportunities. Madison was selected to attend due to her score of “Superior” (which is the highest possible score) for her audition at the NC Thespian Festival in Greensboro. We are proud to say that Madison, battling a sinus infection, achieved another “Superior” at the national level! Accompanied by WCHS Theater Arts Educator Bethany Bondurant, Madison and Bryce were able to see the best of the nation’s high school theater productions, attend workshops held by some of the finest theater educators and performers in the country, and network with college and university theater arts programs. As Madison and Bryce would attest, this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Every day was filled from morning to night with laughs, learning, and tears (yes, there were some gut-wrenching performances). This marked the first time in WCHS history that students attended the ITS Festival, and we are confident that we will continue this tradition for many years to come!
