West Craven Valedictorian expresses thoughts on final day
Article for New Bern Sun Journal
The thought of graduation day finally arriving is absolutely surreal. It is insane that thirteen years of my educational journey has been leading to this day. High school graduation is essentially a confirmation that the constant dedication was worth it. It is my privilege to addresses my classmates at our high school graduation.
As Valedictorian, I must discuss our futures after high school. Before thinking about the future, I had to reminisce about my time in high school. While pondering all of my experiences, I realized that high school is not about one single memory but rather the combination of each and every seemingly meaningless activity. Events such as the homecoming/spirit week PowderPuff Game, bus rides to games with my fellow cheerleaders, and of course, Friday night football games came to mind at first. These are not my only meaningful activities during high school. High school is about making historical raps for a project, intense class debates, and even eating lunch with your friends everyday. The true high school experience comes from the strangers that become best friends after a group project or the teacher who becomes your mentor. We often look back at high school and forget the everyday activities. Daily checker games in the library, bonding with others over the stress of an upcoming test, and life discussions in class are often left to be forgotten when those are truly what make high school memorable. These activities not only formed my high school experience but also formed my personality and beliefs.
I am most grateful for my involvement with Varsity Cheerleading during my time at West Craven. Although cheering proved to be troublesome at times, I was able to use my leadership abilities to connect with others. Cheerleading has enabled me the opportunity to understand the concept of working as a team. A true team is irreplaceable and indescribable to others. Cheerleading has ultimately been responsible for the majority of my wonderful high school memories as well as introducing me with some of my best friends.
As the big day grows closer, I can only begin to accept the reality that I will not be returning to these same hallways in the fall or pulling into the school parking lot every morning. As my life begins to significantly change, I know that I have been prepared for whatever my future holds. I am beyond excited to begin this new journey, but I will always hold my high school memories close. In the future, I will look back and appreciate my accomplishments thus far and begin my next chapter in life. I am thankful and honored to be graduating as West Craven High School’s Class of 2019 Valedictorian.
