J.T. Barber spotlights the True Team

On May 8, 2019, the Craven County Board of Education and J.T. Barber Elementary School would like to spotlight our True School team which is comprised of Roxann Wheeler, Rodnisha Minor, Stacey Dimattia, Jennifer Gold, Christina Webster and administration. This new endeavor/program required our school to create a team of individuals to meet throughout the year on Saturdays to think of new and innovative ideas, processes and/or plans to increase student engagement and strengthen teacher-student relationships. They would meet with other True School Teams across the county as well as across the state of North Carolina.

During this time of our teacher’s willingness to give up their personal Saturdays they were required to dig deeper and look at all facets of our school and areas where opportunities existed for improvement. They were able to collaborate and create a unique learning experience for ALL of our 3rd – 5th grade students and teachers to engage in with one another. Students were allowed to select the top five clubs they would like to participate in based on their area)s)of interest. Then they were given two clubs to visit from their top five list. Our teachers were allowed to choose the topic they would most like to lead with the students.

During the afternoon of the last Friday of March, our school hosted the first Croc Club Day! Through this activity students were engaged in various activities such as Fun with Food, Minute to Win It, STEP, Croc’s Camp, Croc’s Crafts, Basketball and Bowties, Mind over Matter, Gymnastics, Chess, and Silly Science. Throughout the activity both students and teachers were smiling, laughing and enjoying their time spent together. Our team further collaborated and due to both teacher and student interests are exploring ways to include our K-2nd grade classes as well as how to utilize this same model and apply to interventions and/enrichment throughout the grade level curriculum areas.
