Career day at Oaks Road Academy
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” - Harriet Tubman
As the only AVID elementary school in Craven County, each day we strive to provide our scholars with the skills and attributes necessary to succeed in life. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Our goal is to provide them with authentic experiences that will prepare them as they continue their educational journey and allow them to be successful in the future. At Oaks Road Academy, our vision statement proudly states that “At Oaks Road Academy we exist to provide the educational foundation for all students for success in College, Careers, and Citizenship.”
One example is the annual Career Day held each spring. Career Day was organized by school counselors, Angeline Fields and John Carroll. By networking with community organizations, every student at Oaks Road Academy had the opportunity to listen to and interview 3-4 professionals. Some of the careers represented included social worker, doctor, Marine, lawyer, meteorologist, actor, hair stylist, football coach, firefighter and more. These adults shared their stories with our scholars and provided them with insight about their chosen career and their pathway to success.
Some of our most popular visitors were not the above-mentioned adults, but the amazing teens from New Bern High School. Led by Career and Technical Education Director Holly Tolston and Lori Prescott, Career Development Coordinator at NBHS, 5 NBHS students came to share their career aspirations and how the Craven County Schools CTE program is helping them succeed. These students spoke about how their teachers inspired them and encouraged them to always do their best.
Jah’Kure Morris, a first-grade scholar at Oaks Road Academy had this to say about Career Day “My favorite part of Career Day was the kids from New Bern High School came and talked to my class. I liked that part because he talked to us about fire safety. He let us try on his fire gear. It was neat to put it on. When I grow up, I would like to drive a fire truck and help put out fires.”
Journee Richesin, a second-grade scholar at Oaks Road Academy had this to say about Career Day - “I liked Career Day because we got to learn about their careers. We got to learn more about what they did every day. My favorite career that I learned about was the nurse. I like it because her job was to help people who are sick. We have another Career Day when we get to dress up like our future career. I like seeing what other people want to be when they grow up. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher. I want to teach little kids and help them build a lot of knowledge. My favorite teacher is Ms. Burgess.”
We would like to thank everyone who made this spectacular day possible for our Owls. With the continued support of our amazing community, we know that our scholars can reach for the stars and change the world!
