Craven County Schools is proud to celebrate Alex, a 10-year-old fifth-grade student at Trent Park Elementary and the first-place winner of this year’s Invention Convention.

On Tuesday, May 12, the New Bern Fire-Rescue Squad, along with district leaders, surprised Alex at school after learning about his incredible invention. For the Invention Convention, Alex created the Fire Saver Ring, a wearable device designed with a heat sensor and alarm to alert families when smoke or fire is detected in the home. When the alarm sounds, it serves as a signal to get out safely and call 9-1-1.

Alex’s creative and potentially life-saving idea earned him first place across the entire fifth grade. His invention is a wonderful example of how students can use imagination, problem-solving, and innovation to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

To celebrate his accomplishment, members of the New Bern Fire-Rescue Squad visited Trent Park Elementary with cupcakes, congratulations, and a very special surprise — a ride on the big red fire truck.

Craven County Schools is incredibly proud of Alex for using his creativity to help keep people safe. We congratulate him on this outstanding achievement and cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.
