HJ MacDonald Middle School Celebrates Black History Month

BHMHJM

Students and staff at H.J. MacDonald Middle School recently came together for a special Black History Month program themed “Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future.” The event highlighted the rich history, cultural contributions, and lasting impact of African Americans while showcasing the talents and leadership of HJM students.

Held in the school gymnasium, the program featured a variety of performances and presentations that reflected the creativity and school pride of the Warcub community. High-energy performances by the school’s cheerleaders, band, and chorus energized the audience and demonstrated the many talents of HJM students.

One of the highlights of the program was a powerful student-led “Living Biography” tribute honoring influential leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. Through engaging storytelling and performance, students brought important moments in history to life and reminded the audience of the courage and leadership that helped shape the civil rights movement.

The program also included an original poem written and performed by one of HJ MacDonald’s talented students. The heartfelt performance offered a thoughtful reflection on the meaning of Black History Month and the importance of remembering the past while building a better future.

Guest speaker Mark Best delivered the keynote address, sharing an inspiring message encouraging students to learn from history and recognize their role in shaping the future of their communities.

A special presentation highlighted the history and legacy of the Divine Nine, the historically Black Greek-letter organizations known for their commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi participated in the program, giving students insight into the cultural and community impact of these historic organizations.

The Black History Month program served as a meaningful opportunity for students and staff to honor the achievements of the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the next generation of leaders.

Craven County Schools is proud of the students and staff at H.J. MacDonald Middle School for creating a powerful and engaging program that truly reflected the theme, “Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future.”
