High School Special Olympics Basketball Brings Joy and Celebration to the YMCA

Katie NBH Special Olympics

The YMCA was filled with excitement, cheers, and unforgettable moments as high school students from Havelock High School, New Bern High School, and West Craven High School came together for this year’s Special Olympics Basketball event.

Athletes proudly showcased their skills on the court while enjoying friendly competition and celebrating alongside classmates and supporters. From impressive shots and teamwork to enthusiastic high fives and encouraging cheers, the day reflected the true spirit of inclusion, determination, and sportsmanship.

The energy inside the YMCA was contagious as students, staff, and volunteers rallied around each athlete, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and celebration. Events like these highlight not only athletic ability, but also the importance of community, connection, and opportunity for all students to shine.

Craven County Schools extends sincere appreciation to Craven County Parks & Recreation for their continued partnership and support in making this event possible. Thank you to our dedicated staff members who uplift and empower our students every day, and to the many volunteers who worked behind the scenes to ensure a successful event. We are also grateful to the YMCA for serving as such gracious hosts.

Most importantly, we are incredibly proud of our students. Their effort, enthusiasm, and positive spirit made the day truly special and reminded us all why Special Olympics events are such meaningful celebrations of achievement and inclusion.
