Craven County Schools recently celebrated two outstanding Havelock High School student-athletes who are making their mark through athletic achievement, leadership, work ethic, and dedication to their teams.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Cheeseman recognized Peyton Sanford, a member of the Rams women’s golf team, and Michael Gatling, a member of the Rams football team, as Craven County Schools Student-Athletes of the Month.

The students were recognized in front of their teammates, families, coaches, and school administrators, providing an opportunity for those who support them both on and off the field of competition to join in celebrating their accomplishments.

Peyton Sanford — Women’s Golf

A senior, four-year starter and co-captain of the Havelock High School Varsity Women’s Golf Team, Peyton has established herself as one of the top golfers in the Coastal 5A/6A Conference.

Peyton has qualified for the State Championships for three consecutive years and is working toward making her senior season her fourth appearance.

She opened conference competition with an impressive performance, earning first place with a personal-best score of 39 over nine holes and moving to the top of the conference standings.

In addition to her accomplishments on the course, Peyton brings experience, consistency, and a competitive spirit to the Rams golf program. As a co-captain, she serves as a leader and role model for her teammates while continuing to challenge herself to improve.

Her four years of dedication to the program reflect the commitment and perseverance that define a successful student-athlete.

Michael Gatling — Football

Michael is one of the senior leaders of the Havelock High School football team and has demonstrated his versatility by contributing in nearly every phase of the game.

Through the Rams’ first two games, Michael led the team in rushing and ranked second in receiving yards. He recorded five touchdowns—two rushing, two receiving, and one on a kickoff return—while also contributing six tackles on defense.

His impact extends well beyond game day. Michael is recognized for the work ethic he demonstrates in the weight room and at practice, setting an example for his teammates through his preparation and commitment.

His performance has also attracted attention at the collegiate level, with football offers from the University of Richmond and Johnson C. Smith University.

Michael’s ability to contribute in multiple roles, combined with his leadership and work ethic, has made him an important part of the Rams football program.

Recognizing Leadership On and Off the Field

The Craven County Schools Student-Athlete of the Month recognition celebrates students whose contributions extend beyond athletic statistics. Honorees demonstrate leadership, commitment, perseverance, and pride in representing their schools and teams.

Peyton and Michael exemplify those qualities through the way they compete, support their teammates, and represent Havelock High School.

Congratulations to Peyton Sanford and Michael Gatling on this well-deserved recognition. Craven County Schools is proud of the way these two Rams continue to work, lead, and represent their school community.
