Girls Flag Football Makes its Debut in Craven County Schools
Craven County Schools is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural girls' flag football season, marking a significant milestone in local sports offerings. The program is the result of a partnership between Craven County, Pitt and Beaufort County Schools, the Carolina Panthers, and USA Football, providing high school girls with the opportunity to compete in flag football for the first time.
The season kicked off on Saturday, November 16th, at Washington High School, where players showed their talent and enthusiasm on the field. The excitement continues with Week #2 of the season on Saturday, November 23rd, also at Washington High School. In Week #3, games will be held at West Craven High School on Saturday, December 7th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with an admission fee of $10 (children ages six and under enter free). The championship games are set for Saturday, December 14th, at East Carolina University North Campus.
Girls' flag football has quickly become the fastest-growing sport in the country, with more schools and communities embracing the opportunity for young women to participate. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) is considering the formal sanctioning of flag football at its December meetings, a move that could further increase the sport's visibility and support statewide.
"We are incredibly proud of the girls participating in this new and exciting opportunity," said Craven County Schools District Athletic Director Timothy Bennett. "Their involvement in this inaugural season is historic, and we look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of the sport in our community."
This new offering in Craven County Schools reflects the growing interest in providing equitable athletic opportunities for all students, and the school district is thrilled to be a part of this movement.
