Students from every elementary school across the district gathered at Creekside Elementary School on April 22, 2026, for an exciting day of hands-on learning during this year’s Elementary Farmers Market event, part of the district’s annual Farm to School Week celebration.

The event provided students with a unique opportunity to explore the importance of agriculture and learn more about the crops and products that are grown right here in Eastern North Carolina. Throughout the day, students discovered how local fruits and vegetables make their way from farms to tables while learning about crops that thrive in our region, including strawberries, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.

Community partners and local organizations played a key role in making the event both educational and memorable. Representatives from Tidewater Grain Co., B & J Seafood, North Carolina Farm Bureau, White’s Farm, and many additional partners shared their expertise about farming, agriculture, and the seafood industry with students through interactive activities and demonstrations.

One of the highlights of the day was the Farmers Market Gift Shop experience. Students earned “dollars” throughout the event that they could use to “shop” for fun items and local products donated by community farmers and businesses. Students also enjoyed a sweet treat from Simply Natural Creamery, making the day even more special.

The district extends its sincere appreciation to all sponsors, volunteers, school staff members, and community partners who helped make this year’s Farm to School Week event a tremendous success. Their continued support provides students with valuable real-world learning experiences while helping them better understand the importance of agriculture in our local communities.
