Early College EAST Students Lend a Hand During Community Outreach Day

On Friday, November 22, enthusiastic student volunteers from Early College EAST participated in a meaningful Community Outreach Day, supporting local organizations and giving back to the community. The students dedicated their time and efforts to a variety of projects, making a lasting impact on the Colonial Capital Humane Society, local elementary schools, and the women’s shelter.

At the Colonial Capital Humane Society, 40 students rolled up their sleeves to assist with essential tasks like cleaning kennels, walking dogs, and tidying up the cattery’s bedding. They also spent time brushing and grooming cats to improve their comfort and well-being. In addition to animal care, the students cleaned and organized the administrative building, ensuring a more efficient and welcoming environment for staff and visitors.

“Our students are incredibly dedicated to making a positive difference, and the humane society was a perfect place for them to show their commitment to animal welfare,” said Anna Whitlock, a faculty member at Early College EAST. “They worked hard all day, and seeing them engage with the animals and the staff was rewarding. It’s a great learning experience for them to understand the value of service and empathy.”

The outreach didn’t stop there. Students also extended their volunteer efforts to local elementary schools, where they helped teachers with classroom activities, assisting with school clean-up, and interacting with younger students. Additionally, volunteers contributed their time and compassion at the local women’s shelter, helping with various tasks to support its operations.

“Community service is an important part of our school’s mission,” said Early College EAST principal Kris Thompson. “We’re so proud of our students for taking the initiative to support these vital community organizations. It’s clear they understand the importance of giving back, and this day of service allowed them to make a tangible difference in the lives of many.”

Community Outreach Day is part of Early College EAST’s ongoing commitment to fostering student social responsibility and civic engagement. The event not only provided essential assistance to local nonprofits but also offered valuable lessons in teamwork, compassion, and leadership.

Early College EAST students plan to continue their service efforts, participating in future community outreach events aimed at making Craven County a better place for all its residents.
