At Early College EAST High School, Earth Day is about more than celebrating the planet; it’s about taking meaningful action to protect it.

During this week, students turned environmental awareness into hands-on learning by leading Earth Day lessons focused on sustainability, planting, and environmental stewardship. Members of the school’s garden club took the lead in teaching their classmates how to care for the environment while also working to create a greener, more welcoming campus.

As part of their Earth Day efforts, students have been planting greenery and improving outdoor spaces around the school, helping to create an environment that supports both learning and wellness.

“Being able to take care of plants and seeing it also boost your mood, planting more plants outside the school and making the garden space better basically gives more life,” said student Mercedes Escobar. “Studies have shown that it helps uplift students’ moods and makes the space feel a lot healthier and safer.”

Students say these projects not only beautify the campus but also help foster a more positive and comfortable atmosphere for both students and staff. Through these hands-on activities, students are learning that environmental responsibility can begin with small, everyday actions.

From reducing waste and reusing materials to recycling and planting, students are discovering that even simple efforts can have a lasting impact on the environment and future generations.

Craven County Schools is proud to support student-led initiatives that encourage leadership, environmental awareness, and real-world learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
