Craven County Schools is proud to introduce a new recognition celebrating students who demonstrate excellence not only in athletics, but also in academics, leadership, and service.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Cheeseman recently presented the district’s first Craven County Schools Student-Athlete of the Month Awards to two outstanding students from New Bern High School: Louisa Reno, a member of the Lady Bears volleyball team, and Karvin Magwood, a member of the Bears football team.

Both students were recognized for their accomplishments in competition as well as the leadership, dedication, and commitment they demonstrate beyond athletics.

Louisa Reno — Volleyball

A team captain and outside hitter for the New Bern High School Lady Bears volleyball team, Louisa has played an important role in her team’s success this season.

She has helped lead the Lady Bears to victories over West Craven, New Hanover, Havelock, and Croatan while recording a team-leading 47 kills and 17 aces.

Louisa’s leadership extends beyond her performance on the court. She also excels academically and has earned NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete recognition multiple times, demonstrating her commitment to success as both a student and an athlete.

Through her work ethic, leadership, and dedication to her teammates, Louisa represents the qualities Craven County Schools seeks to celebrate through the Student-Athlete of the Month recognition.

Karvin Magwood — Football

Karvin serves as a captain of the New Bern High School Bears football team, where he leads by example both on and off the field.

His leadership also extends throughout the school community. Karvin serves as Secretary of the New Bern High School Student Government Association, demonstrating a commitment to service and involvement beyond athletics.

On the football field, Karvin recently turned in an impressive performance against New Hanover, rushing for 264 yards and scoring three total touchdowns. His athletic accomplishments have also resulted in multiple college football scholarship offers.

Karvin’s combination of athletic achievement, school involvement, and leadership exemplifies the qualities celebrated through this new district recognition.

Celebrating the Whole Student-Athlete

The Craven County Schools Student-Athlete of the Month Award provides an opportunity to recognize students who understand that being a student-athlete is about more than performance on the court or field. It also means demonstrating character, leadership, academic commitment, and pride in representing their school and community.

Congratulations to Louisa Reno and Karvin Magwood, the inaugural Craven County Schools Student-Athletes of the Month. Their accomplishments have set a strong standard for this new recognition and demonstrate what it means to represent Craven County Schools as a student-athlete.
