Craven County Schools Celebrates Volunteers, Announces Linda Thomas Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award
In a heartfelt celebration of service and community spirit, Craven County Schools proudly honored its most dedicated volunteers at the annual Red Carpet Gala, held on May 6, 2025. This year’s event featured a special moment with the presentation of the inaugural Linda Thomas Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, created in honor of former Craven County Board of Education member Ms. Linda Thomas, who dedicated over 24 years of unwavering service to students, staff, families, and schools.
The award, named to reflect Ms. Thomas' lifelong commitment to public education and public service, will be presented annually to a school volunteer who exemplifies exceptional dedication, service hours, and a lasting impact on the school community. Ms. Thomas herself attended the Gala and took the stage to help present the award, a fitting tribute to her legacy.
Three outstanding volunteers were recognized as finalists for their unique and meaningful contributions:
Jonathan Bryant – West Craven Middle School
Known for his generosity and hands-on support, Mr. Bryant mentors students, coaches athletics, and is always ready to lend a hand—from cleaning facilities to offering emotional support and academic help. His greatest gift is his time and the unwavering presence he brings to school life.
Billy Moss – Havelock High School
A cornerstone of the Havelock High Band program, Mr. Moss has turned a logistical role into a leadership one—handling trailer repairs, building props, solving problems, and doing whatever it takes behind the scenes to help students thrive.
Lee Purcell – Oaks Road Academy
Mr. Purcell, this year’s recipient of the Linda Thomas Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, has become a beloved presence in the classroom. He dedicates weekly time to working with fourth graders, nurturing curiosity and connection through reading, discussion, and local historical insights that enrich students' understanding of their community.
“Our volunteers are the quiet heroes of our schools,” said Mr. Rick Stout, Interim Superintendent. “They form deep connections, take on projects with heart, and show our students what commitment and compassion look like in action. Their service uplifts not just individual students, but the culture of our schools as a whole.”
Craven County Schools is proud to honor these community members who go above and beyond to support teachers, students, and school programs. The district extends its deepest gratitude to all volunteers whose tireless efforts continue to enrich lives and learning.
