Students across Craven County Schools recently celebrated Read Across America Week, a nationwide initiative dedicated to inspiring a lifelong love of reading among young learners.

Throughout the week, elementary schools across the district brought books to life through themed activities, creative dress-up days, and special classroom events that encouraged students to explore stories in fun and meaningful ways. From dressing as their favorite book characters to celebrating the joy of storytelling, students embraced the excitement that reading can bring.

A highlight of the week was the opportunity for schools to welcome guest readers from the community. Local leaders, volunteers, and staff members visited classrooms to share their favorite stories and connect with students through reading. These special moments allowed students to see firsthand how reading can bring people together and spark imagination.

Several schools hosted guest readers as part of the celebration, including J.T. Barber Elementary School, W.J. Gurganus Elementary School, Graham A. Barden Elementary School, and Trent Park Elementary School. Community members took time out of their day to read to students, helping reinforce the importance of literacy and demonstrating how powerful a good story can be.

“We are grateful to everyone who visited our schools and shared their love of reading with our students,” said Dr.Cheeseman, Superintendent. “When students see adults excited about books and storytelling, it helps spark curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong passion for learning.”

Read Across America Week serves as an important reminder that reading opens doors to endless possibilities. By celebrating books, authors, and storytelling, Craven County Schools continues its commitment to strengthening literacy skills and nurturing a love of learning in every student.

The district extends a sincere thank you to all the guest readers, volunteers, and community members who helped make this week special for students. Their time and enthusiasm helped create memorable moments that will inspire young readers for years to come.
