Craven County Schools is proud to recognize a historic achievement in its continued commitment to educator excellence. On March 24th, at A.H. Bangert Elementary School, educator Nicole Avolis was surprised and honored as the district’s very first Mentor Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Avolis, a dedicated second-grade teacher with 10 years of experience, was recognized for her outstanding impact on both students and fellow educators, particularly Beginning Teachers. Known as an incredibly supportive and inspiring presence, she consistently provides guidance, encouragement, and professional wisdom to help new educators grow and succeed from their very first days in the classroom.

Within her own classroom, Mrs. Avolis fosters both academic and social-emotional growth, creating a supportive learning environment where students thrive. Beyond her classroom, she is equally committed to uplifting her colleagues by sharing resources, offering mentorship, and celebrating successes both large and small.

This recognition is part of Craven County Schools new Gateway to Greatness Mentor Recognition Program, which honors the vital role mentor teachers play in supporting instructional excellence across the district. Throughout the school year, 19 mentors from across Craven County Schools were nominated and celebrated through the program. From that group, eight outstanding educators applied for the Mentor Teacher of the Year award, with Mrs. Avolis ultimately selected for this distinguished honor.

As a result of this recognition, Mrs. Avolis will now represent Craven County Schools in the Southeast Regional Mentor Teacher of the Year competition.

Craven County Schools extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Avolis for this well-deserved recognition and for setting a powerful example of mentorship, leadership, and educational excellence across the district.
