Craven County Schools and English-Speaking Union Honor Remarkable Refugee Student for Academic Excellence and Resilience
On Wednesday, May 8th, the English-Speaking Union Colonial NC Branch and the Craven County Schools ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Department will host a special recognition ceremony at West Craven Middle School to honor Farahnaz Nazari, a 7th-grade student whose determination, progress, and character have inspired her school community.
Farahnaz, who joined West Craven Middle School as a newcomer to the United States, has overcome significant challenges adjusting to a new language, culture, and environment. Despite these obstacles, she has quickly distinguished herself through academic excellence, personal resilience, and her vibrant spirit.
“Farahnaz is a true example of perseverance and excellence,” said Mrs. Brinson, ESOL and Refugee School Impact Coordinator. “This recognition is not only well-deserved but also a powerful reminder of the strength and potential refugee students bring to our schools.”
Teachers across subjects have praised Farahnaz’s contributions:
“Farahnaz started school in America with a strong sense of optimism and a desire to learn. She is progressing rapidly in English and brings an amazing smile to each class.” – Mrs. Rachel Banks, ELA
“She is kind to everyone and works hard to do her best in all her work. Her enthusiasm is contagious—she is a model student!” – Mrs. Rasmussen, Math
“I’ve never had a student who pushes themselves as much as she does. Farahnaz is bright and truly amazing.” – Mr. Holton, Social Studies
Farahnaz’s story is not only one of personal triumph but also a testament to the inclusive and nurturing environment fostered by Craven County Schools and its dedicated educators.
The ESOL Department and English-Speaking Union are proud to celebrate Farahnaz’s achievements and the broader contributions of refugee and immigrant students in our schools.
