Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Katy Chadwick. I grew up in Craven County and attended New Bern High School. I was accepted into The University of North Carolina at Wilmington as a teaching fellow. In college, I worked with children in grades kindergarten-fifth. I completed my student-teaching in fourth grade at Codington Elementary in Wilmington. I believe that UNCW helped me develop an energetic and hands-on approach to teaching.
I was chosen to participate in an international internship during my last semester of college. I traveled to Belize, a small country in Central America, and taught in an international school for 2 months. This wonderful experience changed my perception of education and how children learn. Teaching overseas also sparked my passion for ESL (English as a Second Language) learners.
Upon graduating from UNCW in 2011, I was offered a position to teach fifth grade at James W. Smith in Cove City, NC. I spent five years working alongside the most dedicated and motivated teachers. Last year I served as a Title 1 Math Interventionist at Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School. I enjoyed getting to know a new group of teachers and I adored the students that I worked with.
This year I am returning to 5th grade at JWS. I cannot wait to have another classroom of students to love. I know we will have a great year laughing and learning together!
I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Justin, for three years. He proposed to me at JWS during my first year of teaching in front of my students. It was an eventful day, to say the least! Justin served 6 years in the US Navy. In our free time we enjoy hiking, camping, playing kickball, frisbee, tennis, and spending time with our puppy, Tucker.
