Tucker Creek Expansion Project

In 2019, the Long Range Facility Plan conducted by Smith Sinnett Architects addressed many opportunities for improvement across the district. Based on the age and inadequacies of many of the school buildings, one of the recommendations included expanding newer school facilities that had been built in more recent years. Tucker Creek Middle School, built in 1997, was designed with future expansion in mind. Havelock Middle School was built in 1956 and with over 64 years of many maintenance repairs, upkeep, and funds invested it was cost-preventative to continue allocating resources to this building.

In February 2020, this plan was shared with the Havelock Community at a community input session at Havelock High School. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and a lack of resources, the discussion on the Tucker Creek Middle School Expansion Project came to a halt until a grant opportunity emerged in the fall of 2023. Craven County Schools applied for a needs-based public school capital fund grant but was not selected in the first round, however, in February of 2024, the state superintendent announced Craven County Schools was awarded $15,297,237.00 with a $3 million match from our County Commissioners.

This development marks a positive step towards addressing the district's infrastructure needs and improving educational facilities for the community.
