NC School Report Cards
Dear Craven County School Families and Community Stakeholders,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Report Card Site for Craven County Schools. Our district, proudly serving approximately 12,100 students across 26 schools, remains dedicated to creating a positive learning environment for each and every student. We are committed to inspiring and engaging all learners to build a better tomorrow.
The NC School Report Card Site offers comprehensive details about our schools, including: class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher qualification. It also includes performance grades (A-F) for each school, as mandated by state law. These grades are derived from a formula that weighs 80% on student achievement and 20% on student growth from one year to the next. Key data points used in this evaluation include:
- End of Grade (EOG) tests for grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science, as well as English Learner Progress.
- End of Course (EOC) tests for grades 9-12 in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Biology, alongside English Learner Progress, 4-year cohort graduation rates, ACT/ACT WorkKeys Assessments, and math course rigor.
While the results for the 2023-2024 school year show we have not yet fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, I am incredibly proud of the dedication and commitment displayed by our educators and students. Here are some notable accomplishments:
- Overall district grade-level proficiency (GLP) has slightly increased to 53.9%, up from 53.6% in the previous year.
- 16 out of 26 schools met or exceeded expected growth. 19 out of 26 schools (73%) earned a letter grade of C or better, maintaining the same level as last year.
- Three schools-Brinson Memorial Elementary, JT Barber Elementary, and Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary improved by a letter grade.
- English Learner Proficiency rose from 18.5% to 20.9%.
- ACT scores saw an increase, with 36.1% of students scoring 19 or above, up from 35.4%.
- Grade-level proficiency in Reading, Mathematics, and Science improved:
-
Reading: 55.2% (up from 54.6%)
-
Math: 53.5% (up from 52.0%)
-
Science: 71.0% (up from 69.2%)

While we celebrate these strides, we acknowledge that our work is ongoing. We understand that student success extends beyond standardized tests and encompasses many facets of growth. Our students excel as athletes, musicians, artists, writers, and scientists, and our schools provide rich opportunities in fine arts, STEM, career and technical education, and athletics. Not all achievements are reflected in the results displayed in the NC School Report Cards, but they are integral to our students’ development.
Other notable highlights for Craven County Schools include:
- All schools have been recognized as military-friendly as awarded the Purple Star District Award by the state of North Carolina.
- Nardi Routten, Craven County Schools' Teacher of the Year (2023), was named the Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year.
- Over $16 million in college scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2024.
- Our district boasts award-winning music, art, and athletic programs.
Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your child.
